50 Lessons in 50 Years: Collected Wisdom from Half a Century of Living and Learning

50 lessons in 50 years

As I approach my 50th birthday, I can only think about this quote I used to hear (and secretly repeat) when I was around people this age, “Yuh old like Methuselah.”

Look at me now. HA!

Aging certainly makes you think differently. At this stage, I don’t think I’m old like Methuselah, I think I’m more like a Halle Berry or an Angela Bassett with everything toned, tight, and nice (still working on the toned and tight), but yeah, you get my point.

Seriously though, getting to this age has been nothing short of a miracle, sustained by God’s grace and coverage over my life. I’ve made good decisions. I’ve made poor ones. I’ve made no decisions at all. I’ve experienced beautiful moments, beautifully chaotic seasons, and the kind of chaos that brought me to my knees. I've lived through days that made me question my life and why I’m here - and I've been blessed with moments that answered that very question.

I could fill pages with stories from these 50 years, and perhaps one day they will find their way into a book; I know the story lives within me (somewhere). But for now, I offer you 50 lessons gathered across five decades of living and learning. My hope is that at least one resonates deeply - that it meets you where you are – because my words have always carried one intention: to heal, to inspire, to teach…sprinkled with laughter along the way.

Let Me Digress a Bit

On March 26, 2026, I turn 50. All gifts, gift vouchers, gift cards, plane tickets, trips, investments, land titles, etc., are accepted – ALL YEAR LONG. And to help you get started, here’s my Amazon 50th Wishlist. Isn’t gifting such joy! Well, it is for me – giving and receiving. Oh, and if you thought this was shameless…welcome to the over 40s, soon to be over 50s club…there is no shame over here. So I was told, and I am learning it’s true.

A Song and a Quote

I believe there is a song and a quote for everything under the sun.

I can’t seem to get Tayna and Patra's song, “Fifty” (Big Woman Tings), out of my head since 2025. So naturally, and aptly too, it is ma jam right now - "If yuh tink wi bad now, what til mi lick 50, dem ago say a how dah big woman yah so frisky.” Mi nuh too sure about the frisky part, but I'm working on it.

As for the quote, I’m going with the most cliché quote there is, “Fifty and Fabulous,” because, of course, that’s what I am! By the way, this level of confidence is something I spent my entire life working on; therefore, I am going to use it, and I suggest you start using your earned confidence as well.

50 Lessons in 50 Years

  1. The simplest things in life can bring the most joy.

  2. Small actions can lead to big things – in every aspect of life.

  3. Having regrets is a waste of brain and emotional energy. Get over it and move on. There must have been a lesson…take that from it.

  4. Smile and laugh more often – it’s good for your heart and soul.

  5. Life can be short or long. Either way. Enjoy it while you’re in it.

  6. Believe in the goodness of people.

  7. Love hard, without restrictions. And if it doesn’t work out – do it again!

  8. Express gratitude daily – it’s the gateway to abundance.

  9. Be authentic even if others don’t understand or like you for being that way.

  10. Be in love with yourself. Treat yourself how you’d want someone to treat you.

  11. Develop a habit for physical health early, and if you start later in life, make it a habit - even if it’s 10 minutes a day.

  12. Eat whatever you want in moderation.

  13. Find an activity that brings joy to your soul. One that you can do daily without getting paid for it. (I’m doing that right now…writing).

  14. Plant a garden. The lessons this teaches you are unbelievable.

  15. Learn to listen to your body before it shouts.

  16. Menopause will make you think you’re crazy, and maybe you are, just a tad bit. Embrace your meno-crazy; fighting it will only make it worse.

  17. You can be in a relationship and still be lonely. If you’re going to be lonely, do so by yourself.

  18. Bills are going to show up EVERY SINGLE MONTH, whether you like it or not. Sometimes they seem to show up every second. Geez!

  19. Start making smart financial investments earlier in life. It can get harder as you get older, especially when challenges arise.

  20. Challenges can derail any well-grounded plan, but a well-grounded plan is the foundation for resilience.

  21. You can find strength in the most unusual circumstances or through the most unexpected people.

  22. Accept people for who they are - work with them or leave them alone.

  23. Spend more time in nature - many lessons and healing.

  24. Talk to old people - lots of wisdom and laughter.

  25. Mentor a young person – it’s called paying it forward.

  26. Volunteer – it’s a way to share your blessings.

  27. Set realistic goals. If you can only achieve one goal this month, then it’s only one goal. Try for 2 goals next month.

  28. Create designated storage spaces in your home - it makes finding things so much easier.

  29. Practice the “10-Minute Tidy” Before Bed – it declutters your mind before you go to rest and resets your space for the next day.

  30. Always have open and honest communication.

  31. Resolve conflicts respectfully.

  32. Treat everybody with respect - irrespective of who they are.

  33. Dream - without limitations and put them into action, bit by bit.

  34. Have more sex, more foreplay, more skin-to-skin connection - with the right person of course.

  35. Play with yourself - you don’t have to wait on anyone to find joy.

  36. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes a day.

  37. Listen to more music - it’s healing.

  38. Always support and celebrate your friends. Speak their names in rooms they aren’t in, send a virtual hug if you can’t be there for them physically, share their products or services, pick up their child from school on the days they are drowning in work, buy a ticket to their event even if you can’t make it, like their post or leave a comment even if it’s a smile.

  39. Be silent more - you’d be surprised what you hear.

  40. Prayer without faith is like being a fish without water…dead!

  41. Treat yourself even once a month. Buy the expensive cup of coffee you’ve been dreaming about or have that slice of cake you’ve been wanting. Better yet, get yourself a massage or some new undies.

  42. Use the things you buy. Stop saying it’s for a special day…every day is special.

  43. If you don’t have anything good to say - shut up!

  44. Do the right thing - even if it’s not the popular thing.

  45. Keep a notebook handy (physical or digital), you're going to forget stuff, especially those over 40.

  46. Keep plants in your home - they infuse tranquility into your space.

  47. We carry the burdens and wisdom of our ancestors. Choose which one you want to take along your journey.

  48. Ask for what you want and learn to accept it with grace. This has been the hardest one for me yet, and still is to some extent. (Except for my Amazon Wishlist above).

  49. Every chaotic moment in your life is the pathway leading to your purpose and alignment. Trust the process, even in the difficulty of it.

  50. Share your life-surviving tips – somebody out there needs it.

For me, turning 50 is like turning 25 for the second time, only now with a little knee-squeak here and there and lots more curiosity.

Oh. That’s your bonus lesson.

51. Be curious – it makes life pretty interesting!
