The Perfect Getaway Is a Mindset: Why Peace Shouldn’t Depend on a Passport

Impromptu Road Trip

Recently, I went on a short road trip with a friend to St. Thomas, Jamaica. We had no destination in mind – we were simply driving.

“Gas is expensive,” you might say. And yes, it is. But so is a therapy session. So is a doctor’s visit. Sometimes, investing in your peace is worth the cost.

As we made our way along the roads, we stumbled upon Roselle Falls. The moment I saw it, I yelled – yes, yelled, STOP!

I had never seen it before, even though I had passed that way before. I was mesmerized.

We pulled over, got out of the car, and I just stood there. Watching the water. Listening to it - taking it all in.

I had found a happy place.

Water has always made me happy.

What I didn't know was that my friend had taken the photo that now appears on the cover of this article. Later that day, when they sent it to me, I found myself staring at it, asking myself a few questions:

  1. Why don't you do more of this?

  2. Why don't you explore more of the hidden gems that exist right here in Jamaica?

  3. Why do you keep waiting for a plane ticket to create moments that make you feel alive?

As I reflected on the day, I realized something: sometimes we become so focused on escaping our lives that we overlook the opportunities to experience joy, wonder, and rest that already exist around us.

And that led me to a bigger question.

What if the perfect getaway isn't a destination at all? What if it's a mindset?

 Rethinking the Getaway

There is something beautiful about travel. The excitement of a boarding pass. The promise of a new experience. The feeling of stepping away from responsibilities, routines, and the weight of everyday life. The promise of peace of mind and rest. But somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that peace only exists on the other side of a plane ticket.

What if that is not true?

What if rest is not only found in luxury resorts, international escapes, or carefully curated vacations? What if peace can be created much closer than we think - within our own homes, communities, routines, and mindset?

The older I get, the more I realize that a “getaway” is not always about distance. Sometimes it is about intentions. It is about creating moments that help you breathe deeper, slow down, reconnect, and feel alive again. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming about Paris, Bali, or Santorini (because I do  - ALL THE TIME), there is also beauty in learning how to create joy right where you are.

Getaway Tips

The good news is that creating moments of rest, wonder, and renewal does not always require a passport or a travel budget. Here are a few ways to create mini vacations for yourself without needing a passport.

1. Become a Tourist in Your Own Community

Many of us know surprisingly little about the places closest to us (guilty). We drive past local beaches, museums, gardens, hiking trails, cafés, heritage sites, and cultural events every day without ever fully experiencing them.

Choose one weekend each month to explore your community, like a visitor would. Research hidden gems nearby. Visit a small restaurant you have never tried. Walk through a local market. Watch the sunset somewhere new. Attend an art show, poetry event, or live music session.

Sometimes novelty - not distance - is what refreshes us.

You may be surprised how restorative a simple change of scenery can feel when approached with curiosity and intention.

 2. Create a “Vacation Day” at Home

Not every getaway requires leaving your house.

One of the most underrated forms of self-care is intentionally slowing your environment down. Light candles. Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb.” Prepare a meal you genuinely enjoy. Wear comfortable clothes (or none at all). Play soft music. Open the windows. Take an afternoon nap without guilt.

You can even theme your day around a destination. I once did this. It was my birthday in 2021 (still during the heights of Covid), so going out was limited. I created my Jamaican beach day right in my passage way - bathing suit, sun hat, rum, music, and plants. You couldn't tell me I wasn't at the beach, minus the sand, of course.

home relaxation

You can create your own:

  • Italian evening with pasta and jazz music

  • Caribbean relaxation day with tropical drinks and reggae

  • Paris-inspired morning with pastries and a French film

  • Spa day with face masks, tea, and calming scents

The point is not to strive for perfection. The point is presence.

Too often, we wait for expensive opportunities to rest while ignoring small opportunities to restore ourselves daily.

3. Explore the World Through Free Virtual Experiences

Technology has made it possible to experience parts of the world without leaving your couch.

Platforms like Google Arts & Culture allow users to explore museums, landmarks, historical sites, and galleries from around the world using immersive virtual tours. You can walk through sections of the Louvre Museum, explore exhibits from the British Museum, or discover artwork and cultural history through interactive online experiences. Some experiences even include 360-degree and virtual reality features that make you feel fully immersed in another space.

This is especially meaningful for people who:

  • Cannot currently afford to travel

  • Have limited mobility

  • Are balancing demanding schedules and/or

  • Simply want to experience something new from home.

A few hours spent exploring art, culture, architecture, or history online can inspire creativity and mental escape in ways we often underestimate.

4. Romanticize Ordinary Moments

One reason vacations feel magical is because we become more present during them. We notice more details. We slow down enough to actually experience life.

But ordinary life also contains beauty when we stop rushing through it.

Drink your morning coffee outside. Watch the rain (one of my favorite things to do). Read a book near a window. Take yourself out for lunch (definitely). Sit near the ocean without needing an agenda. Watch the sunrise before the world becomes noisy.

You do not need permission to create meaningful moments.

One of the greatest mindset shifts is learning that life does not only happen during “special occasions.” Small moments matter too.

5. Schedule Rest Like It Matters

Many people plan vacations once or twice a year, but spend the rest of the year emotionally exhausted. Rest should not only happen after burnout.

Start scheduling mini escapes into your regular life:

  • One unplugged evening per week

  • A solo café date monthly

  • An early morning beach walk

  • A no-work Sunday afternoon, and/or

  • A quarterly “reset day” for yourself.

Rest is not laziness. It is maintenance.

When we consistently create small moments of restoration, we stop depending entirely on dramatic escapes to feel emotionally balanced.

Conclusion

Yes, travel is beautiful.

Seeing new countries, experiencing different cultures, and stepping outside of your normal environment can change you in powerful ways. But peace cannot only exist when your flight confirmation email arrives.

The truth is that some people travel constantly and still feel disconnected from themselves. Others create deeply fulfilling lives by learning how to find wonder, rest, joy, and presence in the spaces they already occupy.

The perfect getaway is not always a location.

Sometimes it is a decision.

A decision to slow down.

A decision to be present.

A decision to create beauty within your current season of life.

A decision to stop postponing peace until “someday.”

Because sometimes the perfect getaway isn't a place at all, it's a mindset.

Ask yourself this, “What if the life you need a break from does not require escape, just more intention?”
